FILM – Permanence [Cassette]

Joe Reinhart best known as the guitarist of AlgernonCadwallader and Hop Along had been jamming out somenew ideas with drummer TJ DeBlois who Joe played withback in the pre-Algernon days in the band Halfway toHolland. They needed a bassist and singer to round outtheir lineup and they had the thought to reach out to Kenwho jumped at the chance. Ken a self-described In Uteroand Pinkerton kid skyrocketed to fame as the singer ofthe pop punk band The Starting Line but he always lovedthe dirtier noisier weirder side of punk and this newproject gave him the chance to embrace that.Everything came together pretty quickly andcollaboratively. They took cues from grittyaggressive-yet-melodic punk and post-hardcore bands likeDrive Like Jehu Mclusky and Braid and they made it apoint to trust their instincts and not overthink anything. They tuned out any thoughts of what other people mightthink of the music and just reveled in the youthful recklessabandon of punk rock at its purest and rawest. They named their band FILM and when it came torecording their debut album Permanence they went withtheir first instincts not overthinking anything and notworrying about any outside pressure. It led to a rawunfussy album and part of its rawness also comes from thefact that technically it was supposed to be a demo. The original intention was to use these recordings as areference when they returned to the studio to officiallyrecord the album but before they were able to do so TJsuddenly passed away in January of 2023 at the age of 38.After taking some time to regroup Joe and Ken decided torelease the recordings theyd already made in TJs honorand TJs death impacted the direction of Kens lyricswhich were only about half-written before his passing.1.Reassurance2.Dumber3.Roundabout4.DiminishedReturn5.LoyaltyProgram6.Blurry7.RingsTru
