Recorded in 1971 by a 27-year-old pastorand an after school program choir, Like AShip is a stirring and powerful meditationon the wayward aftermath of the CivilRights Movement. Tracked with the helpof Chess/Cadet maestros Gene Barge, PhilUpchurch, and Richard Evans, the albumis a mix of euphoric gospel and Mayfieldesque politcal soul, with sleigh bells, handclaps, and jazzy piano stabs. Sampled byT.I., Kanye, and Khalid, Barrett createda rapturous, crossover gospel classic that’sstill wildly relevant.
