(Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Realityis the new album byEluvium the renowned moniker of prolific modern composer,Matthew Robert Cooper. Taking initial inspirations fromT.S.EliotsThe Waste LandandRichard BrautigansAll WatchedOver By Machines Of Loving Grace,(Whirring Marvels)inherentlydeals both with humankinds need for meaning, and theemergence of algorithms reflecting the feedback loops ofhumankinds interactions with machines themselves. Thiscomplicated relationship that we have with technology, automations, and algorithms and the influence they in turn haveon shaping our image of the world is the mechanized heart andsoul of an album that almost instantly establishes itself as a peakinEluviums inimitable catalog.

During the writing process for(Whirring Marvels In) ConsensusReality, Cooper began experiencing shoulder and arm pain thatrendered his left arm increasingly debilitated. This inspired newcompositional methods that blended varying degrees of electronicautomations with traditional songwriting. Lyrical themes were builtusing algorithms to cull content from a notebook filled with years ofscribbled thoughts, poems, considerations, conspiracies, scientificnotions, and notes on the spirit of existence. Employing musiciansfrom all around the world including members of theAmericanContemporary Music Ensemble (ACME),Golden Retriever, and the entireBudapest Scoring Orchestra much of the musicwas conducted and recorded remotely via teleconference duringthe global COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. This approach tocomposing served as an unintended but serendipitous challengefor an album inspired by the complicated convenience oftechnology.

(Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Realityblends an ornatecombination of ingredients to construct a narrative of our dynamicinvention; technological advancement; loneliness and isolationism;and unchecked idealism in a world of never-ending growth. Theresulting hope that somehow emerges is itself a marvel ofinnovation and inspiration.
